Construction work is ongoing to replace the old footbridge to the reserve. An alternative route is available, but the Heron's Wing and Peter Scott hides will be closed until the work is complete. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Highlights - Great Crested Grebe, Mediterranean Gulls, Savi's Warbler, Cuckoo, Garganey and Fox cubs.

Millennium Wetlands

The millennium wetlands are a flurry of breeding activity at the moment. Possibly the most exciting development this week is the paring of two great crested grebes that have been nest building and displaying a little on deep water lake. There are hundreds of black-headed gull nests on the stone islands, with at least four mediterranean gull nests in amongst them - which is the most we've had for years! On the cockle-beds there are about ten lapwing nests, one already with chicks, and of course we have our beautiful pair of kingfishers. It's delightful that both the savi's warbler and cuckoo have stuck around this week and a male garganey has shown up too. We think there might be two lots of fox cubs that have emerged from their dens this week.

Saline and Freshwater Lagoon

The highlights from the waders this week include whimbrel, greenshank and redshank. On the freshwater lagoon there are still lots of goslings and ducklings and we are hoping that the male shoveler and pochard seen on there may breed as well. We can't wait until the hides are open again so you can enjoy the birds and wildlife on this side of the site again too!
