Join in with free walking and cycling events in Burscough

Cycling_1From 24 to 30 July, your favorite local attractions in Burscough are joining together to host a walking and cycling event, offering free guided walks and cycling tours between WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, LWT Mere Sands Wood, Burscough Village, The Ship Inn and Homestead farm Tea Room, providing a great day out for everyone in Southport, Burscough, Wigan, Bolton and Ormskirk.

The schedule includes:

  • Wednesday 24 July & Friday 26 July: 5 mile family and adult cycle tour starting at WWT Martin Mere at 11am (also collecting cyclists at 11.25am at Burscough Bridge Interchange) incorporating The Ship Inn and Homestead Farm Tea Room.
  • Thursday 25 July: 2 mile walk from Burscough Bridge Interchange to WWT Martin Mere starting at 10am from the station.
  • Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 July: A walk with a warden along the WWT Martin Mere community reedbed walk starting at 10am from the car park.
  • Monday 29 July: A tour of LWT Mere Sands Wood starting at 10.30am from the MSW visitor centre. The walk will last for 90 minutes offering a behind the scenes tour.
  • Tuesday 30 July: Walk from WWT Martin Mere to LWT Mere Sands Wood at 10am incorporating a tour of MSW on arrival and a walk back to WWT Martin Mere at 1pm.

July is a great time to get outdoors and watch wildlife, especially at the start of the summer holidays.  It is the best time to see butterflies, bubble bees, damselflies, wild flowers and the newly hatched fledglings such as tree sparrows and blackbirds. WWT Martin Mere offers fantastic opportunities to get up close to these species to take photographs or simply enjoy being immersed in nature.

Get the train or bus to Burscough Bridge Interchange for a great day out.

If you’re travelling from Southport:

Get the train from Southport station to Burscough Bridge Interchange and enjoy a great day out. The train runs at 10.24am, 10.55am, 11.24am, 12 noon, 12.24pm, 12.54pm, 1.24pm & 2pm.

If you’re travelling from Wigan:

Get the train from either Wigan Wallgate (03 & 24 minutes past the hour) or Wigan North Western (18 & 57 minutes past the hour) and enjoy a great day out

If you’re travelling from Bolton:

Get the train from Bolton station to Burscough Bridge Interchange at 45 & 56 minutes past the hour and enjoy a great day out

If you’re travelling from Ormskirk:

Get the 3A bus from Ormskirk Bus Station to Burscough Bridge Interchange at 18 minutes past the hour and enjoy a great day out

WWT Martin Mere is open every day from 9.30am to 5.30pm and parking is free of charge. Situated off the A59, it is signposted from the M61, M58 and M6.  The Centre is also accessible via the Southport to Manchester and the Liverpool to Preston line by train from Burscough Rail Stations.  Visit the web site http://www.wwt.org.uk/martinmere/ to find out what’s on all year round at Martin Mere and the other eight centres.
