Make a Nest Box at Martin Mere
February is the time of year when most of our garden birds are pairing off and on the lookout for nesting sites. At WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre we will be offering visitors the opportunity to give the birds a helping hand by making nest boxes every weekend from 1st February until 16th March.
The sessions will take place between 11am and 3pm in the Pond House and it costs £5 to build a nest box. Although staff will be on-hand for guidance parents are required to stay and supervise their children.
In addition to building nest boxes there is also the opportunity for visitors to buy a range of readymade nest boxes, bird feeders and bird care products in the Martin Mere Gift Shop.
And to celebrate National Nest Box week from 14th to 21st February we will be holding the nest box building sessions in the Pond House everyday from 11am to 3pm.
Marketing Manager, Hannah Clifford, said: “At this time of year, most of our garden birds are pairing off and on the lookout for nesting sites so we thought it would be a good idea to give them a helping hand with our nest box building sessions. The nest box and bug hotel workshops are just one of the many weekend activities we have planned at Martin Mere for 2014.”
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is a haven for a host of creatures such as otters, beavers, kingfishers, geese and swans. Watch birds from the shelter of our comfortable hides, enjoy an expert walk or talk, or simply watch the world go by in our cafe overlooking our waterfowl collection – there’s plenty to do at a Wetland Centre all year round.
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9.30am to 4.30pm during winter months and parking is free of charge. Situated off the A59, it is signposted from the M61, M58 and M6. The Centre is also accessible via the Southport to Manchester and the Liverpool to Preston line by train from Burscough Rail Stations.
