New attraction opens at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre

An exciting new attraction has opened today at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre. The ‘Weird or Wonderful?’ (WOW) development celebrates fascinating bird shapes, sounds and characteristics in a fun and interactive way.
The new development completely transforms the Australasia of the waterfowl gardens and includes a new bridge structure over the lake, 3 new separate exhibits housing cereopsis, magpie geese and screamers, and a walk-in crowned crane aviary featuring free flying avocets, white backed ducks and white-faced whistling ducks.
The aim of the exhibit is to allow our visitors to engage with weird and wonderful wetland birds and get them asking questions about what makes birds so wonderful; why is that swan black? Why does that bird have a blue bill? Why does that bird make that noise? With sound pods and signage we will answer all of these questions whilst families and adults can enjoy getting up close to the wildlife.
Centre Manager, Nick Brooks, said: “The exhibits showcase amazing wetland birds with weird and wonderful adaptations and behaviours. We have identified some of the most weird and wonderful wetlands birds such as crowned cranes, hooded mergansers, black swans, cereopsis, and magpie geese and have brought them together into a set of exhibits to showcase these amazing features and to explain their function. This is going to be a great addition to WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre.”
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre has 150 acres of wildlife gardens that are home to over 60 species of wildfowl, a family of otters and a beaver enclosure as well as an award winning canoe safari and boat tour experience, pond zone, den building, bug hunt area and a new adventure play area that opened in 2012 with the aim of allowing families and adults the opportunity to get close to and interact with nature.
