A Mistle Thrush in the car park this morning, probably over looked in the last 6 weeks, brings the reserve year list onto 100 species. The year list is of course a bit of fun, and given that we have only 'officially' started doing them since 2010 you can't read too much into the figures, however this year we reached 100 seven weeks earlier than 2011. Generally this will mean that by the end of 2012 any additional winter species will be hard to come by.

Two European White-fronted Geese and 5 Tundra Bean Geese with Pink's this morning. At least 1300 Whooper Swan around a thawing Mere.

A near adult male Marsh Harrier and at least 2 imm birds, 2 Peregrine, 2+ Common Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

A Bar-tailed Godwit is still present associating with the Ruff flock which numbered over 80 birds. Other waders include plenty of Lapwing and a few Common Snipe.

A flock of over 100 Greenfinch around the Kingfisher Hide was noteworthy and Water Rail there too.

A grainy shot of Common Shelduck? No, an adult Med Gull coming out of winter plumage on the Mere this afternoon. Note white wing tips and thick-ish red bill.
