Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Red Kite

Bird of the day today was the first record of Red Kite for the year - a rather distant individual seen from the Ron Barker hide this afternoon.

Also from the Ron Barker hide, the Cuckoo was again seen and heard throughout the day.

Still lots of young birds to be seen, with the following "chick counts" received from the hides today;

Common Tern (3), Ringed Plover (3), Avocet (22), Pochard (5), along with many others which were not counted, Mallard, Moorhen, and Black-headed Gull being the most numerous.

2 Mediterranean Gulls were on the Mere this afternoon.
