Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

A Damp Day

An overcast start meant excellent visibility however the rain soon set in. A good count of Little Egret with 5 birds this morning.

Little Stint, 4 Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Dunlin, 10+ Ruff, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 10+ Snipe and 300+ Lapwing.

Stonechat and Wheatear on fencing at the back of the Mere. Three Chiffchaff in a mixed tit flock, Blackcap and Whitethroat all along the Nature Trail.

At least 50 Pink-footed Geese and an increase in the feral flocks of Greylag (~400) and Canada (~150). More wildfowl arriving in the shape of Teal, Wigeon and Pintail.

Two adult Peregrine, 2 Marsh Harrier, 3 Common Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

Currently over 60 species on the reserve.
