Avocets return

A good selection of waders today included the first returning Avocets of the year, a flock of 5 birds spent the day on the Mere along with a Dunlin, a Curlew, 6 Ringed Plover and 54 Oystercatcher. There was also the usual 70 Ruff and at least 15 Black-tailed Godwit and the Woodcock was again seen from the Janet Kear hide and a bonus of 2 Golden Plover seen flying over.

With c1600 Whooper Swan still present and upto 2500 Pink-footed Goose around, the reserve is currently full of wildfowl which will start to slowly depart over the next several weeks. A Barn Owl was again seen late afternoon and the almost resident 3 Peregrines were as usual to be seen sitting around on the fenceposts on the lookout for the next meal, which normally is Teal!

Interesting passerines today included 5 Siskin in the collection, 1 Brambling from Janet kear, Goldcrest and Long-tailed Tits
