Bewick's Swan

Glorious day to take part in the classic winter birding on offer at Martin Mere with dawn to dusk sunshine and light winds. If you were counting all the birds on the reserve at the moment the total numbers would top 15000!

The Mere was packed with birds so picking out a single Bewick's Swan with the Whoopers isn't and hasn't been easy. The bird arrives with Whooper Swan and tends to spend time towards Top Mere.

Another six species of raptor day with 2 Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 4+ Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Merlin with the later being the most difficult to catch up with. The usual Barn Owls and Tawny Owls.

Waders included 2000+ Lapwing, 50+ Ruff, 5 Golden Plover, 2 Oystercatcher, Black-tailed Godwit and Common Snipe.

If you do see anything on or around the reserve do call in at the in focus shop which is next to the new Discovery Hide. We can also point you to the best spots for a good variety of 60+ species for bird which can regularly be seen.
