First Fieldfare of the Autumn

Cool and calm condition making for a lovely autumn day. The first Fieldfare of the autumn with 11 birds on the Reed Bed Walk.

Bewick's Swan still present this morning on the Mere with c100 Whooper Swan and from Hale Hide late afternoon.

Thousands of Pink-footed Geese coming and going and coming back in again! Generally the Pink's don't arrive back on the reserve until late morning. A single Barnacle Goose was picked out of the flock but no reports of other geese at the time of writing.

A female Merlin showed very well from the United Utilities Hide mid afternoon. Other raptors included 2 Marsh Harrier, 3+ Common Buzzard, Peregrine, 2 Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Waders included 500+ Lapwing, 30+ Ruff, 10+ Common Snipe, Green Sandpiper and briefly from the other day 2 Redshank.
