Bird News

A few internet hiccups over the weekend, however we are back for now! No major rarities to report. A Eurasian Wigeon showing characteristics of American Wigeon was seen over the weekend and is probably the same bird that has been seen a few times in the local region over this winter.

The first Barnacle Geese of the year, a small flock of 35 were found over the weekend. At least 5 were present this afternoon on Plover Field. Only small number of Pink-footed Geese coming into roost. At least 800 Whooper Swan still.

The usual selection of raptors included up to 10 Common Buzzard with the majority displaying over nearby woods. Three Peregrine with 2 adults catching Coot and Teal today. The later prey attracted the attention of Great Black-backed Gull which was driven off by an aerial assault by one of the Peregrine pair. Also present 2 Marsh Harrier, 2 Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and nearby today Merlin.

Waders included 3000+ Lapwing, 12 Oystercatcher, 90+ Black-tailed Godwit and a few Common Snipe and Dunlin.

Around the feeding stations, 20+ Tree Sparrow by the in focus shop. Great-spotted Woodpeckers from the Janet Kear Hide. Raven briefly this morning.
