A great variety of birds on the reserve today, the undoubted highlight being a Bittern in flight over Top Mere. Wader numbers are starting to increase, with 87 Ruff, 6 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Curlew, 2 Dunlin, 10 Oystercatcher, 780 Lapwing and 2 or 3 Ringed Plover. Raptors included the ringtail Hen Harrier, 3 Marsh Harriers, and 2 Peregrines. Wildfowl conuts received today as follows - Shelduck 660, Wigeon 1520, Teal 1820, Mallard 1480, Greylag 350, Tufted Duck 19, Pochard 88 and Goldeneye 2. Other more unusual species recorded today included a Water Rail near the Duckery, Grey Wagtail, and a single White-fronted Goose.
