It would be easy to write that the 'usual suspects' have all been present today, but that wouldn't really do justice to the huge numbers of birds that are now present on the reserve.

Over 1000 Lapwing have been swirling around trying to avoid contact with at least one Peregrine (imm), ringtail Hen Harrier, 4 Marsh Harrier, 2 Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel, no wonder they are jumpy. In among the Lapwing are at least 50 Ruff.

A female Red-crested Pochard was on the Mere early afternoon. Unfortunately it will have to join the recent(ish) Marbled Duck on our catagory 'D list' rather than a full upgrade onto our 2011 year list.
