A Peregrine spent much of the day perched on the fence posts at the back of the Mere, as did a Common Buzzard. 2 Goldeneye (male and female) were on the Mere this afternoon, as, unusually was a Little Grebe, which although often seen on other parts of the reserve, rarely ventures out onto the open water of the Mere itself. At least 13 White-fronted Geese and 4 Barnacle Geese were with Pink-footed Geese this afternoon, and a Black Swan was with around 600 Whoopers. Although of captive origin (they are native to Australia), Black Swans turn up at Martin Mere every winter, and records from Iceland suggest that they also spend the Summer with Whoopers. Other birds recorded today include about 50 Ruff, over 30 Black-tailed Godwits, Oystercatcher, Kingfisher, and Willow Tit.
