Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Common Terns and Little Egret

A pair of adult Common Tern with 5 juveniles appeared on the Mere late afternoon which gave the young Black headed Gulls something to chase and bully! A Green Sandpiper was around the Mere again with a Common Sandpiper and at least 2 male Ruff are still present on site. A Little Egret was on view from Harrier hide and United Utilities hide.

Great spotted Woodpecker and Treecreeper were seen along with many juvenile birds visiting the feeding stations including Tree Sparrows, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Robins and Blue Tits. A male Blackcap was feeding on insects in the lush vegetation around the mere, a favourite spot for young Wrens this time of year.

A Sparrowhawk caused a few flushes of the Lapwings and Gulls on the mere as it flew over a few times today. The Tawny Owl was showing in trees above the path to United Utilities this afternoon.
