Festival of Lapwings

If you've not been recently then you have been missing out on seeing huge numbers of Lapwing feeding around the reserve. At least 3000 birds are present making it particularly spectacular when they take to the air. Most of these birds will be moving on as we approach March, although around 100 pairs breed on the reserve making it one of the best spots to see Lapwing in the North West.

Other waders being flushed by assorted raptors, big gulls and herons included 70+ Black-tailed Godwit, 10+ Oystercatcher, 3 Dunlin and Common Snipe. Surprisingly still no Ringed Plover.

Raptors included 6+ Common Buzzard, 2 Peregrine, Marsh Harrier, 2 Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Bewick's Swan again on Monday.

Stonechat from the Ron Barker Hide.
