Hobby

A first summer Hobby flew south over the reserve late morning grabbing a couple of insect meals on it's way through. In the afternoon the bird was hunting in front of the Harrier Hide and perching on the old 'telegraph' poles.

It's prey could have been the newly emerged Ruddy Darters and Emerald Damselflies seen on the Reed Bed Walk today (other odonata are available).

Other raptors seen today included Marsh Harrier, 5+ Common Buzzard, 3 Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

A Cuckoo was seen along the fence post at the back of Sunley's Marsh in the haze. This could be an adult bird on it's way back south or perhaps a recently fledged juvenile.

Now 8 moulting Ruff, mostly on Vinson's and Sunley's Marsh.
