Latest Sightings

After the stormy weather, everything has returned to normal at Martin Mere, and it is expected to stay clear and dry this week.

We had a lovely sunset during our 3pm Wild Bird Feed today, with large flocks of Lapwing flying over the mere. You can view the migratory Whooper Swans up close from our Discovery hide, along with Greylag Geese and duck species like Pintail, Wigeon, Mallard, Pochard and Shelduck. Don’t miss our Floodlit Swan events starting 7th Jan.

Also, on the mere, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Great White Egret, 12 Cormorants and 1 Greater Black-Backed Gull were observed.

There has been over 60 Black-Tailed Godwit visible today. It is a vulnerable wading bird identifiable by its long pink and black bill and long legs. When flying, its white wing bars, and black tail band are visible.

There are around 6000 Pink-Footed Geese on site which arrived from Iceland in September. They typically sit on plover field behind the mere during the day, so it is a good idea to bring binoculars. You will see them flying around the site, especially in the morning.

At Ron Barker hide, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Hen Harrier and 1 Little Grebe were spotted.

At Harrier hide, we often see Grey Heron, Buzzards, Gadwall and Teal.
