It's been a cold and frosty start to the new year here at Martin Mere, with plenty to see. There are plenty of wintering water birds, with high numbers of Wigeon, Pintail and Shelduck all visible from our Discovery Hide. There are also plenty of Whooper Swans about with our high count for the year being ~800. Every day we do a wild bird feed at 3pm at Discovery Hide which includes wardens commentary - this is a fantastic opportunity to see all these birds up close. Comorants, Tufted ducks, Shovelers, Pochards, Black Tailed Godwits, Ruff and Lapwing are also often found on the mere. A woodcock has been seen from Janet Kear along with plenty of garden birds like Goldfinch and Greenfinch. A song thrush has also been spotted from Ron Barker.
