Latest Sightings

Snow free and light winds, warm in the sun this morning. Plenty of raptor action with Hen Harrier (ringtail) mid morning, immature Peregrine, Marsh Harrier, 4+ Common Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. Barn Owl and Tawny Owl again.

The first Curlew of the year had occurred last weekend but were not reported until today when a couple more were seen feeding along the back edge of the Mere. Other waders included 47 Avocet, 200+ Lapwing, 20 Black-tailed Godwit, 50+ Oystercatcher, 40+ Ruff and a few Common Snipe.

A Bittern was seen early on towards the back left of Woodend Marsh.

Med Gull
The Med Gull's lack of black in the wings and bright red bill stand out in this shot

An adult breeding plumage Med Gull was with Black-headed Gulls again late afternoon. We can expected numbers of this smart gull to increase here as the weeks roll on.

 

A single Bewick's Swan was with Whooper Swan on top Mere (after we'd produced the map..) The count of Whooper Swan on friday was just over 1000 birds.

Other species worth noting included Stonechats along the fence line near Plover Field
