Latest Sightings

Warm weather setting in for the next couple of days. Generally this tends to produce a 'doldrum' in terms of sightings reports although it might be some encouragement for local Hobbies to visit the reserve? The warmth should be good for sightings of butterflies and dragonflies too.

Waders are still the main target with Lapwing numbers approaching 400. Another good count of Black-tailed Godwit today with 200+ birds. At least 2 Green Sandpiper and 2 Common Sandpipers still hanging around. Small numbers of Avocet, Oystercatcher, Redshank, a single Curlew, Ringed Plover, 4 Dunlin and 5 Little Ringed Plover.

The usual raptors with 3 Common Buzzard, 3 Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Kingfishers are being seen daily with the best spot being the Ron Barker Hide although today birds were seen in flight from the Harrier Hide.

Two Common Tern and 2 Little Egret. Still 5 young Teal on Vinson's Marsh.

At least 3 fledged Sedge Warbler and 2 adults on Vinson's Marsh and Whitethroat in brambles to the right of the Miller's Bridge in front of the Ron Barker Hide.

On Sunday a Yellow Wagtail was seen in flight from the Ron Barker Hide and near by Bullfinch and Nuthatch were heard, with the later being the first record since late winter.

As usual it's easily possible to top 60 species in a day at Martin Mere particularly when you also do the Reed Bed Walk.
