More Waders

A glorious day with light SE winds and full sunshine, very spring like indeed.

More signs of spring being just round the corner with the further arrivals of Avocet with 10 birds around the edge of the Mere. A few people have asked if these birds are early? The earliest date for Avocet at Martin Mere was the 15th February and it is quite likely that we will see birds coming in earlier than that in future years given a warmer spell.

The count of Oystercatcher rose to 73, at least 700 Lapwing present, 2+ Ringed Plover, 8 Black-tailed Godwit, 91 Ruff, Golden Plover and Woodcock from the Janet Kear Hide.

The Black-headed Gull roost is building with 2450 birds. Keep an eye out for Med Gulls.

Raptors included Merlin, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 3+ Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Two Roe Deer were seen at 3.10pm from the Ron Barker.
