There is something quite special seeing the first groups of Whooper Swan arriving at Martin Mere. As the season progresses it becomes more difficult to point to a group of swans flying in and say these birds have just come in from Iceland (via Scotland). We now have 29 birds on the reserve including 2 juvenile birds which is rather early for a family group. It's unlikely that we will have more than a few hundred here by the end of the month but watch this space...
A few of the 29 Whooper Swan now on the reserve.
More signs of autumn passage with a group of 5 Greenshank dropping in during a spell rain late morning in front of the Harrier Hide. The usual waders present included 600+ Lapwing, 30+ Ruff and 20+ Common Snipe.
