Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Whooper influx

With condition over the past few days looking excellent for bring birds in from Iceland and Greenland this mornings count of 1186 Whooper Swan on the reserve was more than likely. In fact another 350 birds were just outside the reserve boundary making it a good count for early November. Less Pink-footed Geese with 6000 at the roost. We could well expect the odd Greenland White-front to start turning up given the recent airflow.

A Merlin was new in, also present 3 Peregrine, 2+ Marsh Harrier, 3 Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

Thousands of wildfowl now present too with Teal, Wigeon, Pintail and Mallard making up the bulk in addition to Shelduck, Pochard, Gadwall, Shoveler and Tufted Duck.

Limited species count of waders with 600+ Lapwing, 40+ Ruff including a few confusing green/grey legged birds and a few Common Snipe.
