The Chinese new year starts today and auspiciously it the Year of the Dragon. Having just looked it up, 2012 is a 'water dragon' year so that's got to be good, if you believe in things unsubstantiated by science..

Nippy in the wind today but great visibility. Three Marsh Harrier hunting throughout the day, 2 Peregrine, 2 Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

A (the?) single Berwick's Swan seen early on but no sign by mid-afternoon, 1000+ Whooper Swan, small groups of Pink-footed Geese feeding out on reserve fields, 300+ Greylag and 26 Barnacle Geese.

Waders included 1000+ Lapwing, 21 Black-tailed Godwit, 30+ Ruff, also a few Common Snipe.

Plenty of finch, Reed Bunting and Tree Sparrow activity from the Janet Kear Hide with a female Brambling also there.

A nice group of 12 Long-tailed Tit along the Nature Trail.
