Bewick's in Britain!
The first three Bewick's swans arrived at our Welney centre last night, officially kicking off the swan season here in the UK! The wind, although in the 'wrong' direction, was very light and the skies were clear so visibility was good for flying.
Day length is the most significant factor influencing the timing of the broad migratory window. However, the precise timing of arrival at wintering sites is down to weather conditions, and in particular, wind direction. The swans will be waiting for either calm conditions or north-easterly tail winds to carry them on their way. It looks as though the wind could be swinging around to the east on Sunday so now is the time to keep tabs on the weather forecast and look to the skies!
