An Avocet feeding at 2 days of age.

I love my job!

This beautiful Avocet chick hatched out at the beginning of July as a single fertile egg from a clutch of 4. Although initially nervous, we have successfully hatched 7 Redshank, 1 Avocet and 3 Black-winged stilts from our new wader aviary. These new additions lend another exciting new prospect to my job breeding species at WWT Slimbridge.

If anyone doubts whether chicks exhibit wild and natural behaviours without the help of a parent; then think again! This little guy rocks!
