Slimbridge volunteer, Phil Copeland, has been honoured for their outstanding contribution in a special new award.
The ‘Zoo and Aquarium Hero’ award has been conferred to a select few individuals who have made a special contribution to zoos and aquariums.
Phil Copeland has made an amazing difference to Slimbridge by being an incredible part of the Aviculture team. Phil joined as an Aviculture carpenter, but he has supported the team in a whole range of areas; from creating gates, to erecting fences, feeding, food delivering, painting, netting, pressure-washing, strimming and more.

Deputy Living Collections Manager, Phoebe Vaughan, explained:
What really makes Phil our hero is how he has joined in and become a fully-fledged team member. Phil only attends twice a week but has taken on responsibilities, sets an incredible professional example for us, and throws himself at absolutely everything and for anyone.
In this round of awardees Phil Copeland received the award along with just 14 other volunteers across the UK and Ireland. They join existing Heroes, including fundraisers who supported zoos over the pandemic and TV stars Aaron, Tyler and Cam Whitnall – hosts of CBBC’s One Zoo three.
It is hoped the Zoo and Aquarium Heroes will continue to share their passion of the animal world and keep inspiring others to make a difference.
