Terry Waite to unveil new information boards at Slimbridge
Terry Waite, CBE, will unveil new information boards at the Canoe safari when he visits Slimbridge Wetland Centre next week (Saturday 27).
Former hostage Mr Waite, will be representing the Romany Society as its patron, after it kindly donated money to the Centre to pay for the project.
The money has funded a series of information boards which will be dotted around the one kilometre wetland trail so visitors can learn more about the wildlife which flourishes there.
Dave Paynter, reserve manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Romany Society for their donation and delighted to welcome them to Slimbridge.
“The new information boards will allow visitors to learn more about the wildlife and rich history of the local waterways.”
Since the safari was built in 2007 water voles have flourished . Visitors paddling along the trail will be able to read about the wildlife they can hope to see and also about the history of fishing on the nearby River Severn.
Mr Waite an English humanitarian and author was captured on a trip to Lebanon when trying to negotiate the release of hostages in 1987. He then spent more than four years in captivity. Since his release he has written about his experiences bringing him to international acclaim as an author.
On the Saturday he will spend the day at WWT Slimbridge along with members of the Society.
The Romany society celebrates the life and perpetuates the work and ideals of George Bramwell Evens (1884 - 1943), better known as 'Romany of the BBC,' who was a radio broadcaster and writer on countryside and natural history matters and a Minister of the Methodist Church.
