Visitors view spoon-billed sandpipers at Slimbridge for first time
Thirteen spoon-billed sandpipers, one of the world’s most endangered birds, have now completed their quarantine and been moved to WWT Slimbridge.
From tomorrow, the birds will be viewable by Slimbridge visitors via a live CCTV link. At 2.30pm daily, a live feed - commentated by the spoon-billed sandpiper's 'mum' - will be broadcast into the cinema.
A film of the expedition to Russia to collect the birds as eggs will also be shown daily.
TV presenter and WWT Vice President Kate Humble hosted an exclusive sold-out event at Slimbridge today to mark the revealing of these amazing birds in their new high-tech rearing facility.
There’s thought to be fewer than 100 pairs of spoon-billed sandpipers left in the wild. You can read more about the project to save them on the blog.
