A day of reflection

We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with her family at this time, and with the entire nation as we remember our monarch after a life of extraordinary service.

Today's sightings included...

Zeiss Hide
Two Garganey were amongst the Teal this morning, with five Pintail and two Wigeon also noted. An adult Knot was roosting here too, with other waders including a Redshank, 24 Ruff (including 14 juveniles), 11 Black-tailed Godwit and three Green Sandpiper. The two Spoonbill were roosting on the southern island, and two adult Water Rail were in the newly cut reedbed rides below the hide. By mid-morning four Cattle Egret had joined the two Spoonbill on the Top New Piece.

South Lake
The Black-tailed Godwit flock numbered 380 birds this morning and were joined by two Ruff and a Greenshank. A Cetti's Warbler was also heard.

Estuary Tower
A flock of 141 Barnacle Goose were on the Dumbles with the Ross’s Goose. A small flock of 12 Shoveler were on the Long Ground Pool along with a Green Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit, 17 Teal and two Tufted Duck.

Summer Walkway / Middle Point
The juvenile Swallows are still around being fed at the Pillbox by the viewing platform. Four Whinchat and a Wheatear were on the cross fence. As the tide dropped a few waders came in to view including seven Bar-tailed Godwit, seven Little Stint, six Sanderling and a Turnstone plus a mixed flock of 200+ Dunlin and Ringed Plover. Only 74 Curlew were visible in the long grass during high tide.

Around lunchtime an Osprey was seen over the reserve to north.

Kingfisher Hide
Three Cattle Egret were on the Bottom New Piece before being joined by a fourth bird and moving to the Top New Piece later in the morning.

South Finger Reedbed
A Kingfisher was on the settling pond from the viewing screen this morning.

Robbie Garnett Hide
Six Redshank, two Ruff, a Green Sandpiper and Greenshank plus two Snipe and around 100 Teal.

Rushy Hide
The single Avocet was on the lower pond this morning along with a Greenshank, 25 Redshank, 23 Black-tailed Godwit, 41 Lapwing, five Ruff, three Snipe, plus two adult and a juvenile Spotted Redshank. Later all four adult Spotted Redshank were seen with the juvenile.
