Another Osprey

Our third Osprey of the year was on the Severn this morning

Before and as the weather worsened we saw a few more new migrants arrive, the Osprey was resting on driftwood on the Severn until it was spotted by large gulls, it was harassed into moving and flew across to Awre where it climbed and continued towards Newnham on Severn. On the mud were 80+ Shelduck and a flocks of small waders that totalled 42 Ringed Plover, 169 Dunlin, 5 Sanderling and a Little Stint. At high tide a couple of Whimbrel dropped in to the Ox Piece and later in the day a Grey Plover was also on the mud.

From the Shepherds Hut hide looking East a Great White and four Little Egrets, Grey Heron and 2 Crane were sheltering behind the hedge whilst 20+ Swallow and a few Sand Martins fed along the ditch, further flocks of martins were over the Long Ground and Rushy and we also had a few Swifts about today including a screaming pair. A Yellow Wagtail was about Middle Point early morning and a Grasshopper Warbler sang but only the once. A male Wheatear was on the fence.

The Top Piece hosted 39 Avocet, 31 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 pairs of Teal, a pair of Redshank and three male and one feamle Shoveler, the Tack Piece had 3 Black-tailed Godwit,9 Avocet, pair of Redshank and the Rushy 12 Avocet including two nests. The Little-ringed Plovers were still present. A calling Water Rail was of note at thePill Box Pool.
