Curlew close ups

Tack Piece

The curlew flock has been pretty special in here all week, 120 birds today and many packed into the near part of the field getting protection from the strong winds. The redshank (45) and ruff (4) are very active here as well. Over 1000 wigeon with a scattering of teal and shoveler are keeping the field looking busy. The whitefront flock are in fields to the north and just viewable through gaps in the hedge.

Estuary Tower

A flock of 770 lapwing seem to be all on site today, dunlin 350 and golden plover 70 are among them. Lots of feral geese a great close up view of the white headed buzzard and a distant peregrine on the edge of the Dumbles. Great to see lots of wigeon close to the tower on the pillbox pool, Dumbles scrape and the Tack Piece, it seems they have accepted the new tower.

Rushy

Only the one Bewick left but still plenty of ducks. Pochard 92, pintail 96 and tufted duck 95. Eight snipe were in there favourite spot on the lower pond and 11 avocet and a lone redshank were feeding there.

South Lake

A dense group of 306 black tailed godwits were fast asleep but lots of activity from 24 avocet and 4 oystercatchers. Shoveler numbers remain high with 84 counted also 47 Pochard and a couple of very fine summer plumage cormorants.

Zeiss Hide and South Finger

Only a scattering of ducks and waders with 147 wigeon the most numerous, avocet very active with 19 so far and two pairs of cranes landed on the sea wall. The Kingfisher was seen from the walkway so watch out for activity around the nesting bank later.
