Flying dandelions

We've seen a steady passage of Yellow Wagtail today, flying overhead calling as they move north. They're so bright and yellow, in a field they can look like dandelions.

At least six Yellow Wagtail were on the Tack Piece this afternoon, but we've seen a steady stream of birds flying overhead - not just here but across all areas of the site. Also on the Tack Piece were a Spotted Redshank and two Greenshank, all feeding in or around the floodwater. There are also a good number of hirundines buzzing about, with Swallow and Sand Martin the main species.

Zeiss Hide
A Bar-tailed Godwit was with the Black-tailed Godwit flock this morning on the Top New Piece. Also present were 28 Avocet, with the male Crane on the nest island.

Canoe Safari
We seem to have an small influx of 'Acro' warblers this morning, with lots of singing Sedge Warbler and Reed Warbler here and other reedbed areas around the reserve.

Estuary Tower
A Lesser Whitethroat was singing along the Summer Walkway hedgerow this morning. We hope to open the walkway next week - keep an eye on our sightings blogs and Twitter to find out when. A pair of Avocet and a pair of Oystercatcher were on the Dumbles scrape, and a Wheatear was on the Middle Point cross fence.

South Lake
A total of 69 Avocet were on the wader scrape this morning, including 27 nests. Three drake Shoveler were noted, as was the Crane on the nest island. Two pairs of Oystercatcher were at either end of the scrape, and an immature drake Goldeneye was on the deep lake. An adult drake Goldeneye was on the Eider Pen with the captive birds.
