Further highlights for early November 2024

November has seen winter arrivals beginning to arrive and some special seasonal bird species about the reserve.

11 November

White-rumped Sandpiper on the Dumbles, drake Green-winged Teal on the Dumbles scrape, male Bearded Tit from the Knott Hide (Pillbox Pool), Firecrest in the scrub below the Estuary Tower, 2 adult Dark-bellied Brent Geese on the Dumbles and Little Stint with the Dunlin. White-rumped Sandpiper was reported on South Lake via Birdguides.

Pink-footed Goose, Peregrine, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Grey Wagtail, Redpoll, a few Chaffinch and Siskins over, Redwings over, 200 Pintail on the Severn, 200 Wigeon on the scrape

Top New Piece

Little Stint with 398 Dunlin, 160 Golden Plover, 4 Spotted Redshank, 22 Black-tailed Godwit and 6 Snipe + 400 Teal.

South Lake

1cy male Goldeneye on deep lake with GC and 2 Little Grebes, Pochard, Tufted Ducks, Great Black-backed, Common and 120 Black-headed Gulls, 5 Ruff, 110 Lapwing, Spotted Redshank, 240 Teal, and 60 Shoveler on the scrape.

10 November

Two Dark-bellied Brent Geese, male Bearded Tit by the pondzone/Martin Smith Smith Hide bridge,

Rushy Hide/ Peng Observatory

Two Bewick's Swans, 100s of duck including 37 Pintail and 40 Pochard.

Tack Piece

140 Dunlin with Golden Plover and Lapwing in the central flood, few hundred Wigeon on the scrape.

Estuary Tower

Dozen Snipe, Little Stint among the Dunlin and Lapwing in the pools, 24 Russian White-fronted Geese, 14 Crane on or flying across the Severn.

South Lake

Immature Spoonbill on North Causeway with 2 Great Black- backed, a few Herring and BH Gulls, 27 Ruff (but mobile), 5 Spotted Redshank, 3 Dunlin, 2 Snipe, c30 Black-tailed Godwit and 80 Lapwing + flocks of Teal and Shoveler.

8 November

Bittern from Zeiss Hide in the cut reedbed rides below the hide.

Twenty two Cattle Egrets.

Ringed Plover on the Dumbles.

Adult Mediterranean Gull on the South Lake.
