The team made a coordinated high tide roost count this morning to get an accurate picture of how many waders are currently with us

The team made a coordinated high tide roost count this morning, split between the roost on the riverbank and the roost on the Top New Piece. This helps us build a picture of how many waders are currently with us.

High Tide counts
Full totals included 759 Dunlin, 18 Curlew Sandpiper, two Sanderling, 5 Little Stint, 65 Grey Plover, 66 Ringed Plover, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 12 Black-tailed Godwit and two Avocet. A break down of locations can be seen below.

Middle Point
Early morning at low tide saw 33 Grey Plover, 15 Ringed Plover, at least four Curlew Sandpiper, around 30 Dunlin and two Bar-tailed Godwit on the mud shelf near to the point, with approximately 25 Swallow feeding over. At high tide the roost included 351 Dunlin, two Sanderling, two Curlew Sandpiper, two Little Stint, 65 Grey Plover, 58 Ringed Plover, plus 12 Little Egret, eight Pintail, and two Wheatear were also seen.

Zeiss Hide
The high tide roost on the Top New Piece included 408 Dunlin, two Avocet, 16 Curlew Sandpiper, three Little Stint, eight Ringed Plover, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 12 Black-tailed Godwit and 22 Ruff. A juvenile Marsh Harrier was sat on the shoreline for most of the morning, and a Water Rail was in reedbed rides.

Rushy Hide
Two Spotted Redshank (one adult, one juvenile) were on the lower pond this morning along with 120 Black-tailed Godwit and 13 Redshank. Four Shelduck were on the upper pond, another sign of the impending winter months ahead. Four Grey Wagtail were on the concrete overflow in front of the hide, but are very mobile and have been seen across the site this morning.

Robbie Garnett Hide
Five Snipe were around the shoreline along with 17 Wigeon, four Lapwing, 94 Teal and 24 Black-tailed Godwit along the channel.

South Finger Reedbed
A small male Sparrowhawk was hunting here this morning. Two Teal were on the settling pond and a Water Rail was calling near the Van de Bovenkamp Hide.
