Highlights 10 to 14 July

Brown Hare on the Dumbles- MJM


Brown Hare encounters have increased this year, the Dumbles is a good place to look for them but they also show up at the hides. Some animals can be very confiding and show little fear of humans. Today has seen a lot of activity around the Tack Piece with good views from the paths to the hides and the Summer Walkway.

Tack Piece scrape and field

Adult Wood Sandpiper (also present yesterday), 10 Green Sandpiper, 4 male Ruff, 2 Redshank, Little-ringed Plover (four on 13th), 6 Lapwing, Oystercatcher, 2 Grey Heron, Little Egret, 7 Teal + 25 Greylag

Rushy Hide/Peng Observatory

Common Sandpiper, a few Ruff and Redshank and a small flock of Lapwing.

South Lake

Spotted Redshank, 3 Ruff, 190 Black-tailed Godwit, 15+ Redshank, 3 Green Sandpiper, Crane pair with 2 juveniles (these juveniles have fledged, they can fly), 3 Pochard, two Grey Heron, a large flock of Gadwall on deep lake.

Middle Point

A very high count of 19 Grey Heron and 7 Little Egret on the Severn, 2 Whimbrel flew upriver calling early morning, they may be on the mud with the feeding Curlew north of the point.

Top New Piece

Singing Reed Bunting, Reed Warblers feeding young, 45 Lapwing, 3 Avocet, Shoveler female with 5 ducklings, Little Grebe and female Wigeon.

Kingfisher Hide

Little Grebe with a small chick. Emperor Dragonfly hawking over the pool.

South Finger Reed bed viewing Screen

The berries are ripening in the hedgerow and is attracting a Lesser Whitethroat and half a dozen Blackcaps. Also Reed Warblers, singing Sedge Warbler and nearby in the wood a couple of Treecreeper.

Glossy Ibis

One seen again on the 10th at 0834am flying over the Tack Piece, it settled on the duck marsh at South Lake briefly but flew off SW soon after.
