Imposters in the flock

A nice surprise on the wader scrape at the South Lake this morning with two Bar-tailed Godwit mixed in with the Black-tailed Godwit flock.

South Lake
The two Bar-tailed Godwits were showing very well from the Discovery Hide this morning with one bird in breeding plumage (photo) and the other in non-breeding plumage. Also on the wader scrape were 66 Black-tailed Godwit, 5 Avocet and a pair of Little-ringed Plover. A Kingfisher flew past whilst the activity of Oystercatchers suggest the chicks have hatched on the roof. Sure enough later in the afternoon three chicks were being fed by both adults on the causeway in front of the hide, sheltering in the vegetation until an adult arrived with food.

A Black Tern dropped in to the deep lake late afternoon.

Nine Avocets were on the Tack Piece this morning along with a single Oystercatcher (probably the off-duty bird from the nesting pair on the Rushy), six Wigeon and 43 Shelduck.

Two of the drake Garganey were present this morning along with two Greenshank, 25 Avocet, 5 drake Shoveler, 25 Redshank, 13 Herring Gull, 3 Oystercatcher and a drake Teal.

Kingfisher Hide
The pair of Kingfishers were queueing up with breakfast this morning before each took a quick bath. A Cetti’s Warbler and Cuckoo could be heard singing near hide.

Martin Smith Hide
A Cuckoo was heard this morning nearby.
