Kingfisher sightings

Two prolonged cold spells this winter certainly led to a high percentage of frozen water bodies, such periods can be difficult for some wetlands species such as waders, Cetti's Warbler and Kingfisher. We have increased Kingfisher habitat on the reserve which has allowed for larger winter territories, as a result we have more overwintering birds that remain on site. Fishing opportunities become limited on the ice bound days so Kingfishers are forced to try their luck at the more public spots. We have a couple of birds that can at times appear close to the paths. One bird in particular visits the central part of the grounds, which is known as the Matrix, the warmer clear running water here is often free of ice.

If you are lucky enough to encounter one of the Kingfishers, please be considerate and give them the space they need to fish, let them do what they need to do to survive whilst enjoying the company of one of the most brilliant birds on the reserve. Nesting territories should begin to be established from mid-March so the breeding season will hopefully be underway next month. Keep checking the blog here or on our Twitter feed for updates.
