Late summer arrivals

A few more passage birds have arrived over the last few days.

New-in this last couple of days- an immature Spoonbill has taken a liking to the Pill Box Pool but has also visited the Rushy to sleep, it arrived yesterday and is still here today. We also have our first juvenile Marsh Harrier of the season on site, it was accompanying another older bird yesterday. A few waders have been noted on the river, the Dunlin increased to 157 today with a Turnstone, a Sanderling and 3 Whimbrel seen on the 8th. Lots of hirundines over the site at the moment including 40 Sand Martin today also 8 Swifts yesterday.

Other counts from around the reserve as follows

Tack Piece

Early morning- 51 Black-tailed Godwit, Green Sandpiper, 53 Teal, 6 Pied Wagtail. Bottom New Piece- Ross's Goose, 50 Barnacle and a few Canada Geese.

South Lake

Juvenile Little-ringed Plover, adult Spotted Redshank, 8 adult Ruff, 146 Black-tailed Godwit, 22 Lapwing, Mediterranean Gull with Black-headed Gulls, single Kingfisher, Wigeon, Pochard + 4 Cormorant.

Top New Piece

Adult Sanderling and two juvenile Ruff with the small wader flock came in from the Severn and consisted of 59 Ringed Plover (4 juvenile), 130+ Dunlin including 10+ juveniles, variety of moulting stages, 4 Avocet, 3 Redshank, 3 Garganey, 18 Shoveler, 84 Teal, 1 Wigeon + 24 Gadwall.

Bottom New Piece

Ross's Goose with 50 Barnacle Geese.

Middle Point

As the tide was on the way in- adult Spotted Redshank flew by, 2 Redshank, 157 Dunlin, 57 Ringed Plover, 80+ Curlew.
