Look out for waders

A quick check of the Stephen Kirk Hide this morning resulted in a great show of waders, with lots more elsewhere on the reserve too.

A quick check of the Stephen Kirk Hide this morning resulted in a great show of waders, with lots more elsewhere on the reserve too.

Stephen Kirk Hide
The adult Spotted Redshank was showing well here this morning but struggling to eat a fish it had caught. Eventually the bird gave up and looked for an alternative breakfast. Also present at close range were a Greenshank, two Redshank, five Green Sandpiper, three Little-ringed Plover and 13 Black-tailed Godwit.

Summer Walkway
A juvenile Green Woodpecker was on the track by Goose House this afternoon - not a common bird on the reserve. A Yellow Wagtail flew over the walkway this morning heading for the cattle herd. Out on the river were 149 Curlew, 115 Shelduck plus five ducklings, five Grey Heron, two Little Egret, seven Avocet, four Oystercatcher and 22 Great Black-backed Gull.

South Lake
The Red Knot was here again with 52 Redshank, nine Black-tailed Godwit, eight Little-ringed Plover, six Ruff and an adult Avocet guarding eight juveniles. The Great Crested Grebe chick was on the deep lake, also here were four Cormorant and the three Egyptian Geese.

Zeiss Hide
Waders counted this morning included 101 Lapwing, 80 Dunlin, two Green Sandpiper, a Greenshank, four adult Avocet with at least two new chicks and an older chick, and 64 Black-tailed Godwit. A Grey Heron was prowling the edge of the reedbed.

Rushy Hide
Four Green Sandpiper were on the lower pond.
