Super South Lake

Some great birding here this morning.

South Lake

Some great birding here this morning. A very high count of 160 Knot is most unusual for the South Lake, Black tailed Godwit almost as impressive with 308 among them were 59 Lapwing, 2 Greenshank, 2 Redshank and a Ruff. A good selection of ducks as well with Shoveler 75, Teal 121, Tufted Duck 17, Pochard 5 and Pintail 2.

Rushy

A packed 408 Teal here and 6 Pintail. A Green Sandpiper was here first thing but soon flew off, looks like it may be roosting here and feeding on nearby farmyards and slurry pits. There was a single Black Tailed Godwit and 3 Snipe. A good bunch of Pied Wagtails and a single very fine Grey Wagtail close to the hide.

Tack Piece.

At least 3 Snipe at Martin Smith another 40 Teal scattered around, the lone and lame Avocet was in front of Robbie Garnett. There were a handful of Chiffchaff several of which were singing and a single calling Goldcrest.

Estuary Walkway

A singing Mistle Thrush near the new estuary tower, hundreds of Greylag, Canada and Barnacle Geese across the Dumbles, a few distant Curlews and a roaming flock of 22 Golden Plover. A Peregrine was on a log and 3 Little Egrets with many Shelduck distantly on the estuary. Lots of passerines over the Dumbles including a flock of 40 Linnet, lots of scattered Skylark and around 30 Meadow Pipits. A Kingfisher was seen briefly near the Goose House.

Zeiss Hide

Another 13 Knot here and 32 extra Black Tailed Godwits. Around 150 Lapwing were moving between here and the Dumbles and a flock of 22 Redshank contained a Spotted Redshank. There was a distant Ruff and a lone Avocet. Just 1 Snipe rather surprisingly in the very wet fields but a good flock of Starlings and 440 Teal and 80 Wigeon were enjoying the conditions. Also a Buzzard, 3 Herons and a passing Little Egret.
