Next sign of winter?

The first Pochard of the winter season were on the Rushy this morning, a sure sign winter is on its way as birds start to arrive and slot in to their winter routines, although they are still a few weeks too early for the wheelbarrow to arrive!

The first Pochard of the winter season were on the Rushy this morning, a sure sign winter is on its way as birds start to arrive and slot in to their winter routines, although the small flock this morning are still a few weeks too early for the wheelbarrow to appear for the morning feed!

Middle Point / Summer Walkway
A male Merlin was a treat this morning for our volunteers at Middle Point whilst out on the river were at least 2 Knot and 4 Little Egret. A Green Woodpecker was heard inland.

South Lake
Bird from the Discovery Hide this morning including 266 Teal, a flypast Kingfisher, a singing Cetti's Warbler, 79 Black-tailed Godwit, a calling Water Rail, 24 Shoveler, a Grey Heron and two drake Pochard.

Zeiss Hide
The two juvenile Curlew Sandpiper were on the wader scrape this morning with 101 Dunlin and 15 Ringed Plover. The Teal flock has increased to 1292 birds, and also present were 122 Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Snipe, 13 Redshank, 26 Ruff, a juvenile Little-ringed Plover and 60 Lapwing. A Water Rail was calling from the South Finger Reedbed.

Rushy Hide
There were at least 381 Teal on the lower pond this morning along with 15 Black-tailed Godwit and a Snipe, with 4 Pochard and 3 Pintail on the upper pond.
