Return of the Snipe

We've seen our first returning Snipe of the autumn this week

We've seen our first returning Snipe of the autumn this week as migration continues for our waders. Today one bird was on the back of the lower pond of the Rushy, and a second was over the fence on the Tack Piece. Also new today was our first juvenile Black-tailed Godwit.

South Lake
The Spotted Redshank dropped in mid-morning to join five Ruff, 51 Redshank, three Little Ringed Plover, 241 Black-tailed Godwit, four Dunlin and two Avocet. The pair of Common Tern were back on the raft.

Rushy Hide
A brood of four fledged Shoveler were with the female on the lower pond, showing well from the hide. Also present was a brood of 11 Gadwall with a female, several broods of Mallard and a brood of Shelduck. Waders included two adult Avocet with three juveniles, two Black-tailed Godwit, five Green Sandpiper and four Oystercatcher.

Summer Walkway / Middle Point
A total of 243 Curlew were in the high tide roost with 6 Oystercatcher, but the birds remained flightly and nervous.

Zeiss Hide
The high tide roost included three summer-plumaged Red Knot, three Black-tailed Godwit including our first juvenile, three Ringed Plover, 14 Dunlin, three Redshank and 71 Avocet.
