Sightings for Sunday 22 August

A roundup of today's sightings

South Lake

Eleven Ruff included a number of juveniles, 63 Black-tailed Godwit, juvenile Wood Sandpiper, 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 Spotted Redshank, 1 Redshank, 2 adult Little-ringed Plover, 15 Pied Wagtail and plenty of ducks most of which were Gadwall. At the Hogarth Hide three Green Sandpiper fed in the drying channel.

The Dumbles foreshore and mudflats

Just before the tide came in at least 223 Ringed Plover and 250+ Dunlin (very mobile), a juvenile Red Knot, 2 juvenile Sanderling, adult breeding plumage Grey Plover and100+ Curlew, a very ragged plumage Marsh Harrier flushed the high tide roost on the Dumbles this morning, it headed upriver.

Wheatear on the southern cross fence and another near Shepherds Hut hide on the seawall at Middle Point. 52 Yellow Wagtail were on the saltmarsh/pasture and along the southern cross fence, the Ross's Goose with Barnacle and Canada Goose flock on the Lower Dumbles, 11 Little Egret and the immature Spoonbill were on the foreshore over high tide.

Rushy Hide

Adult and juvenile Avocet, our last remaining birds, 2 Green Sandpper, 16 Redshank and 24 Black-tailed Godwit.

Tack Piece

Two Green Sandpiper, 52 Teal and 5 Gadwall.

Martin Smith Hide

Great White Egret early morning but may have relocated to the Ox Piece ditch.

Top New Piece

At least two Garganey and 5 Wigeon among the flocks of Teal, Gadwall and Shoveler, a flock of c60 Lapwing (also visiting the Four Score wheat field), 3 Black-tailed Godwit in the shallows.
