Wet and sunny spells after the storm

After yesterday's storm we've had periods of sunny spells and more heavy showers. The fields are getting wetter and as more winter birds arrive they're spreading out and feeding in the newly wet areas.

South Lake
Two Mediterranean Gull, an adult and a second-winter bird were on the deep lake this morning, joining 294 Black-headed Gull, 19 Herring Gull and single Lesser Black-backed Gull. Also of note were 348 Teal, 87 Shoveler and 79 Black-tailed Godwit.

Martin Smith Hide
A Water Rail was again on the left hand island with several Teal.

Zeiss Hide
A few small rugs of Wigeon were dotted around the Top New Piece this morning, totaling 205 birds in all, made up of 113 males and 92 females. Other duck included 257 Teal, 13 Pintail and 25 Shoveler. Also noted were two Redshank, a Black-tailed Godwit, eight Snipe, a Water Rail in the reedbed rides and 97 Lapwing. The White-fronted Goose flocked dropped in here early afternoon.
