Storm Dennis moves on through

Just when you thought it couldn't get any wetter, Storm Dennis brought lots of heavy rain which has driven up water levels on the fields, ponds and ditches. A few paths were flooded today, nothing to worry about, only a few shallow puddles and should drop off again.

Tack Piece

Has been a really busy spot during the day with counts of 205 Curlew, 935 Wigeon, 66 Redshank and 25 Ruff. It was good to see flocks of Pintail on the central flood and a few Shoveler, Tufted Duck and even a Pochard on the scrape. At least 6 Snipe were on the cut rush islands out from the Martin Smith Hide. A very white Buzzard and flocks of Redwing and Fieldfare were about the field boundaries. All remaining 12 Bewick's Swans were present over midday, this included 6 cygnets.

Estuary Tower

A male Peregrine was on the foreshore as well as 15 Great Black-backed Gulls and 39 Barnacle Geese, the Snow x Bar-headed Goose and brief visit by the single Bewick's Swan and two cygnets.

South Lake

17 Avocet and 260+ Black-tailed Godwit, despite the wind a pair of Great Crested Grebe were displaying. Pochard were sheltering in the SE corner of the lake and a drake Goldeneye popped in briefly.

Zeiss Hide/Top New Piece

280 Wigeon, a few Curlew, Teal, Gadwall and Pochard, c30 Black-headed Gull, 2 Herring Gull, Cormorant and singing Cetti's Warbler

Bottom New Piece from Kingfisher Hide

Flocks of 160 Golden Plover, 200 Dunlin and 200 Lapwing. The field E of Van de Bovenkamp Hide (Tin Shed) had 480 feeding Black-headed Gull mid-morning.
