Summer walkway closure and latest sightings
This week is your last chance to see the River Severn and all it has to offer from Middle Point (wellies advisable) and the Sea Wall. The Summer Walkway, the path beyond the Estuary Tower, will be closed from Monday the 4th of October and this week it will be closing at 15:30 to take into account the clocks changing.
Through the Autumn and Winter months, the Estuary Tower will be there to offer great views across the Dumbles and out onto the river, reducing disturbance to the Geese and waders on the surrounding fields.
Todays’ Sightings:
Rushy Hide
From Rushy Hide there were 29 Snipe, 8 Black-tailed Godwit, 83 Lapwing, 8 Redshank, 2 Spotted Redshank, 18 Pintail, and 16 Pochard.
Tack Piece
On the Tack Piece, visible from Martin Smith and the Robbie Garnett Hides, there were 7 White-fronted geese, 20 Cattle Egret, the juvenile Spoonbill, 47 Curlew, and 9 Redshank. Around the central flood were large numbers of Wigeon, Teal, Greylag, and a Jay in the boundary hedge.
Estuary Tower
From the tower 279 Barnacle Geese, 1 Ross’s Goose, 150 Lapwing, 62 Dunlin and a Little Stint on flashes. Around the scrape, there were 145 Grazing Wigeon and around 200 Teal. In the hedgerows, there were Cetti’s warblers, Long-tailed tits, and a few Chiffchaff. Also visible were 9 Crane and around 100 Pintail.
South Lake
From Discovery Hide there were 272 Godwit, 30 Ruff, 13 Snipe, 74 Shoveler, 514 Teal, 13 Pochard, 8 Shelduck, and 1 Great-crested Grebe on the deep lake. Later in the afternoon, the Spoonbill joined them.
Zeiss Hide
From Zeiss hide there were 258 Teal, 4 Little Egret (one with colour rings), 1 Great Egret, 14 Greylag geese, 2 Canada Geese, 2 Shelduck, and 3 Curlew on the Bottom new piece field.
Kingfisher Hide
From Kingfisher hide there were 4 Gadwall, a Buzzard, and 1 Great Egret.
