Sunshine and showers

A predominantely sunny day with a few showers passing through but some great birding to be had.

The latest Bewick's Swan blog from our researcher Julia Newth is now available online here.

Estuary Tower
The pair of Whooper Swans could be seen with a few Bewick's Swans and the White-fronted Goose flock in the Goose House Ground, a field to the north of the Tack Piece. Closer to the hide on the Tack Piece this morning were 16 Ruff, 14 Redshank, 71 Curlew and a total of 1037 Wigeon. Out on the Dumbles were 6 of the Pink-footed Geese.

South Lake
Birds counted this morning included 273 Black-tailed Godwit, 132 Teal, 91 Shoveler, 419 Lapwing, 3 Ruff, 3 Snipe, 2 Dunlin, 8 Cormorant, 88 Pochard and 38 Tufted Duck. A flock of 56 Knot joined the godwit flock mid-morning.

Zeiss Hide
Slim pickings on the Top New Piece in gusty conditions with just 21 Shelduck, 318 Wigeon, 20 Lapwing, 3 Snipe, 49 Dunlin, 28 Teal and 9 Pochard braving the wind.

Rushy Hide
At least 62 of the Bewick's Swans were present this morning but most moved off to the fields very early, even before the wheelbarrow with their breakfast had arrived! The wind tends to unsettle them and they like to get out early. Other birds on the pond included 116 Pochard, 259 Tufted Duck and 134 Shelduck.
