Wild Safaris start again

The Wild Safaris have resumed with a slightly reduced number of people.

It's been brilliant for dragonflies and butterflies in the extremely hot weather, the new ponds in the Ox Piece and Goose House Ground are very popular with these insects. Great White and Little Egrets have been seen along the paleochannel and sightings of Roe Deer, Cranes and Marsh Harrier have also been added to the list over the last couple of days.

Middle Point/Severn

A range of waders have been seen including a few 'high Arctic breeders', singles of Turnstone, Grey Plover (2nd calendar year), adult Red Knot and up to seven Sanderling have arrived with an influx of up to 109 Dunlin. c150 Curlew are seen daily with Black-tailed Godwits visiting from the scrapes, a few pairs of Oystercatcher as well as the Shelduck with broods and over 1000 Black-headed Gull all make up a busy scene on the mud.

19th July- 4 juvenile Little-ringed Plover, 2 ad Ringed Plover, ad Red Knot, 2cy Grey Plover, 123 Curlew 1 head started, 3 Oystercatcher, influx of 109 Dunlin, 40 Black-tailed Godwit, 12 L. Egret, 4 G. Heron, 40 Shelduck, Cape Shelduck + reeling Grasshopper Warbler

Middle Point/Reeds

A Grasshopper Warbler was still singing yesterday.

South Lake

20th July-Four Ruff, 9 Little-ringed Plover, 68 Redshank (1 juv), 6 Lapwing, 170 Black-tailed Godwit, 9 Teal, the deep lake is busy with moulting Coot and ducks, pair of Common Tern.

19th July- 167 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Little-ringed Plover, 13 Lapwing, 4 male Ruff, 30 Redshank, juv L. Egret, G. Heron, 100s of moulting duck and Coot, 2 Little Grebe, 2 Common Tern and 50 Black-headed Gull.

Top New Piece

20th July -Broods of 5,7,9,5 and 2 Mallard, broods of 9, 3 and 3 Gadwall, brood of 4 Shelduck, Little-ringed Plover, 24 Dunlin inc colour ringed bird, lots of Reed Warblers coming out to feed in the grazed reed stubble below Zeiss Hide. The colour ringed Dunlin was still present.

19th July- 2 GW Egret, 5 L. Egret (4 juv), 8 Little-ringed Plover, 4 male Ruff, Green Sadpiper, Common Sandpiper, 81 Redshank (3 juvs + 6 chicks/near fledged), 82 Lapwing, 3 Black-tailed Godwit inc juv limosa + numerous duck broods + 30 Dunlin which includes a colour/darvic ringed adult.

Rushy

20th July- the Spotted Redshank, two Little-ringed Plover, 4 Avocet, 5 Green Sandpiper, broods of Gadwall, Shelduck and Mallard.

19th July- most of the action on the lower pond- ad Spotted Redshank, 2 Redshank, 11 Black-tailed Godwit, 7 Avocet, at least one Little-ringed Plover and 6 Green Sandpiper.

Tack Piece

20th July- Three Green Sandpiper, 2 Little-ringed Plover, 6 Teal and 8 Black-headed Gull Martin Smith Hide-brood of Shoveler.

19th July- 6 Green Sandpiper, adult Greenshank and 6 Lapwing.
